Family Dancing - Urban Barn Dance Style
Urban barn dancing invites all age groups and families to come and have fun together. They are Family Dances.
They often include special features such as spot dances, best costume prizes and potluck dinners which add to the fun. They are frequently connected to a theme (ie Thanksgiving, Valentine’s Day) and offer opportunities to dress up and add drama and extra fun to the event.
The dance floor is a wonderful equalizer for old and young alike as competition doesn’t work very well while co-operation definitely does. Through the changing of partners and threading through all of the other dancers, that are inherent in the urban barn dance style, everyone dances with everyone also sharing touch, smiles, eye contact and community feelings.
I organize and call family dances for multi-aged groups: at family events such as birthdays, weddings and reunions… in schools to bring staff, parents and children together in a cooperative and fun activity…and for…inter-generational community events.
"In many countries of the world, traditional dance is an everyday part of the culture. People come together to celebrate festivals, births, weddings, feast days and other life events through dancing. Learning how to work and play with a variety of people is at the core of creating a healthy community."

I introduce each dance by teaching it on the spot and then lead everyone through it as the caller. No experience, or partner, is necessary just a willingness to have fun and to share it with others.
