Walker/Wheelchair Dancing
In the fall of 2012 I initiated dancing, with people using walkers and wheel chairs, at half speed to jigs and reels. It perks up everyone's energy including mine.
Loss of mobility can diminish our lives and brings with it a tendency to shut down and be less connected with others, but it doesn't have to. As participants move with the music in whatever way suites them, they pass by others with a touch, a smile and/or an eye contact that satisfies the need for connection, recognition and the intimacy that we all crave in life.
Please note that a large space is necessary as well as support staff to move wheelchairs and assist walkers.
In standard urban barn dance style I introduce each dance by teaching it on the spot and then lead everyone through it as the caller. No experience is necessary just a willingness to have fun and to share it with others.
